About Baraut

Baraut is a city in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh. It is located at a distance of 20 km away from its district headquarters Baghpat, 532 km away from the state capital, Lucknow and 58 km away from the national capital, Delhi. As the city is close to Delhi it comes under the National Capital Region (NCR) yet there is no proper roadway connection between Baraut city and Delhi.

People of all religions and communities reside in Baraut out of which Hindus form the majority of population apart from Muslims, Jains, Christians, Sikhs and Buddhist. Hindi and Urdu are the most spoken languages in the city. Baraut is popular for its whets and axes which is exported throughout India.

Geography of Baraut

Baraut covers a total area of 10.36 sq km which is 4 sq mi. The city is elevated at a height of 231 meters above sea level that is about 758 feet and it has its coordinates at 29° 10' 02 North latitude and 77° 26' 29 East longitude. The city is bounded by Binauli Tehsil in the East, Chhaprauli Tehsil in the North, Baghpat Tehsil in the South and Pilana Tehsil in the South. More than two river canals run through the city. Summers are very hot and long while the winters are cool and pleasant in the city.

The child population in Baraut constitutes 13.18 % of the total city population. The average literacy rate in the city is recorded as 77.98 % i.e. 69559. The male literacy rate constitutes 84.65 % i.e. 39900 and female literacy rate constitutes 70.51 % i.e. 29659. The total number of illiterates in the city is recorded as 35074.

Baraut constitutes a Municipal Board which forms the local self-government in the city. The city is one of the three sub-divisions or Tehsils in Baghpat district apart from Baghpat and Khekada. Baghpat district constitutes 6 developmental blocks in which the Baraut Tehsil constitutes 3 developmental blocks namely Baraut, Binauli and Chhaprauli. The city belongs to Meerut administrative division of Uttar Pradesh.

Baraut falls under Baghpat Lok Sabha Constituency and the current MP of the constituency is Shri Satyapal Singh elected to the Parliament in 2014. Baraut forms its own Vidhan Sabha Constituency with constituency number 51 and the current MLA of Baraut constituency is Shri Lokesh Dixit elected in 2012. Former Indian prime minister Shri Chaudhary Charan Singh was elected to Parliament from Baraut.
